A fossil terrestrial fauna from Tobène (Senegal) provides a unique early Pliocene window in western Africa

چکیده

Early Pliocene hominin evolutionary scenarios proposed to date mostly rely on paleontological investigations from eastern Africa. Filling major geographical gaps in the fossil record could potentially invalidate these and stimulate development of improved theories. Based published literature, no continental vertebrates have been discovered Western Africa situation is only slightly better central northern Here, we expand vertebrate western with description Tobène fauna, a new fossiliferous Neogene locality Senegal. We describe diversity large mammals, including at least ten taxa based fragmentary remains recovered alluvial channel deposits. Estimation weathering events biochronology suggests an early age. Most mammalian were widely distributed over African continent during Pliocene. Possible faunal correlations localities call for continent-wide investigations.***************

Pseudomeriones hansi nov. sp. (Rodentia, Mammalia) from the Early Pliocene (Ruscinian) Fauna of I deli (Turkey)

Pseudomeriones hansi nov. sp. is described from deli locality (SW Sivas, Central Anatolia). The morphological description of the new species is given within its own systematic and stratigraphic relationships. The micromammalian fauna of deli gives evidence for a new species which is characterized by its small size, its M2 with a deep lingual sinus curved backward and its m1 with a symmetric tri...

Late Miocene–Pliocene Paleoclimatic Evolution Documented by Terrestrial Mollusk Populations in the Western Chinese Loess Plateau

The Neogene eolian deposits in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) are one of the most useful continental deposits for understanding climatic changes. To decipher Late Neogene paleoclimatic changes in the CLP, we present a terrestrial mollusk record spanning the time interval between 7.1 and 3.5 Ma from the western CLP. The results indicate four stages of paleoclimatic evolution: From 7.1 to 6.2 Ma...

A fossil stapes from Sterkfontein, South Africa, and the hearing capabilities of early hominids.

The three small bones of the human middle ear—the malleus, incus and stapes—have been the subject of research since the mid fifteenth century (Arensburg et al., 1981). Consequently, knowledge of their anatomy and embryology is extensive (e.g. Schuknecht & Gulya, 1986; McPhee & Van de Water, 1988). Middle ear bones have also been well studied in other extant primates and in Neanderthals (e.g., M...
